Ferguson MO

I live in Central IL.  If I head northeast for 3 hours I wind up in Chicago.  If I go southwest for 3 hours I wind up in St. Louis.  Princess Bear (PB) has Dr's in both places so I'm very used to hitting that highway 74 in either direction.  Both are big cities that have typical big city problems.  Gangs are rampant in both.  It just seems like St. Louis is a dirtier, more depressed area that always feels like it's on the cusp of  the $hit hitting the fan.  If you've been watching the news this week I'm sure you've heard about the rioting and looting in Ferguson MO that is a reaction to the shooting of a black teenager by a white cop.  It's a complete travesty that any of this is happening on so many different levels.  I'm warning you know that my view points my  piss you off so if you don't want to risk that stop reading NOW and check my next post in a day or so.

-First problem with any of this is the basic premise of the riots and looting.  There are lots of conflicting stories surrounding this shooting.  Bottom line an 18 year old is dead.  That is a tragedy.  A horrible, horrible tragedy.  The fact that many of the people of Ferguson are now participating in rioting and looting does nothing but detract from the fact that Michael Brown was shot.  The theory that nothing was happening and there was no attention being paid to the situation until the rioting  just doesn't hold.  The only focus now is on the rioting.  Not cool.

-The fact that it is based on race is truly taking back the civil rights movement by 50 plus years.  Don't make it about the fact that it was a black kid shot by a white cop.  Just make it about a loss of life.  Nothing more nothing less.

-Also don't make out the victim to be a Boy Scout when he wasn't.  I'm not saying that Michael Brown was a gang banger (although these pictures certainly seem to shed light on the fact that he quite possibly was.  See pics HERE).   Now some people are saying that those pictures are being taken out of context.  That might very well be the case.  It might very well be the case that they are spot on in what they portray.  I don't know.  What I do know is that we live in a world that has been made very small by the advent of the world wide web and that if you don't want something out there then you shouldn't put yourself in that position in the first place.  Growing up my mom made me crazy with one of her pieces of sage advice.  She always told us to never ever ever put anything in writing unless we were willing to back it up 100% of the time.  She also said that I should never let a picture being taken of me unless I was willing for my grandmother to see it.  Ya know what?  That was actually a pretty good litmus test for me growing up!

-I'm not going to begin to speculate as to whether the police have handled this correctly or not.  What I will say is that when a cop tells me to do something guess what?  I'm going to do it and I'm going to do it quickly.  It's just a matter of respect for the badge.  You don't have to like it but you do have to respect it.  That hasn't happened on several occasions.  The first time being when Michael Brown and his friend were told by the police officer to get out of the street and on to the sidewalk.  Being the oh so cool guys they were they didn't listen.  Things escalated and now Michael Brown is dead.  Frankly whether the cop used too much force or not Michael Brown and his attitude and lack of respect for authority had a part to play in his own death.  If you are a member of the press and cops tell you to leave you should probably listen and leave.  I'm all for freedom of speech and the fact that reporters have a duty to report things as they go on.  I get why reporters have descended about Ferguson.  I also understand that once again if a cop tells me to move I'm going to move.  If I'm a reporter I might still film while I'm moving but I'd freaking move!

-Just a preppers side note here.  The $hit is hitting the proverbial fan.  One of the first responses was for Walmart to stop selling ammunition.  While I certainly respect their right to make that decision and in some ways can even understand how they were trying to help the rioting and violence to not escalate it's still something that preppers should look at and make note off.  If you lived near Ferguson and had a gun and you want defend your home or business you need a cache of ammo.  Don't let yourself get screwed by not having this.  It is also very interesting that 2 of the 3 stores in the main strip where the rioting and looting were taking place that were not damaged in any way were those who were protected by armed citizens.  Guns do have a place in our society and this is just one positive example of that.  You can read that store HERE and HERE.

-President Obama really needs to shut is pie hole if he's going to a) negate the authority of the police, b) be a total hypocrite and talk about transparency when he truly has no idea what that concept is, c) stop playing the race card when it just inflames things.  He did it with the "If I had a son he could look like Trayvon Martin" and he's doing it again here.  You can read and see a video HERE

-Blacks inciting further violence are truly just hurting their own and need to be b#*ch slapped.  When you throw gas on a fire you risk burning yourself.  Be smarter than that.

-How sad is it that this all boils down to race and black peoples reaction to an event?  If the cop that shot Michael Brown was black or Latino you would have never heard of Michael Brown.  Blacks can complain about racial inequality but it is a cycle that they perpetuate themselves.  Below are a few very interesting commentaries for black people about this mess in Ferguson.  The first one features a woman that uses a lot of swearing.  If that bothers you don't watch this. HERE  and HERE.  I think it is incredibly refreshing and brave for these to people to stand up and call a spade a spade.  I'm sure it couldn't have been easy for them.

Farm Kings Season 4 coming soon

So who's ready for new Farm Kings episodes?  I know that Princess Bear (PB) and I are looking very forward to it.  Only thing I'm wondering about is why GAC bounced them to Friday nights at 9pm.  Isn't getting sent to Friday nights the last thing that happens to a show before it's cancelled?  I mean it's called the Friday night death slot for Pete's sake. Maybe we should start taking bets on whethere there will be a Season 5 but the idea makes me sad frankly.  That would royally suck.  The only upside of this is that  PB can watch it and not be groggy when I am trying to get her butt out of bed at 6:30am!  So I'm thinking we should do a scorecard of sorts of things that they might cover in episodes  (but most likely wont).

- Bitty's wedding.  OK we know they're covering this from the pics that were on Facebook and it was covered in their magazine.
- Maggie & Tim's wedding.  I'm going with no way no how.
- Joe & Heather's wedding.  Again, not likely.
- Tim & Maggie's baby girl.  I'd say there's a better chance of hell freezing over.

Am I forgetting anything?

Stuff I'm loving right now

I haven't done one of these in awhile so I thought I'd do a stuff I'm loving post.  Things that really work or just make me happy.  Trip my trigger kinda thing.  So here goes:

Ahnu Karma Sandals photo blog10_zps320d00a7.jpg
It is completely ridiculous how comfortable these shoes are! I asked my friend Jen who is a very experienced traveler what some of her recommended shoes were for walking a lot. These were on her list. Princess Bear (PB) was very disappointed that I only ordered one pair to see what I thought before buying her a pair as well. I certainly don't begrudge her comfy footwear and I certainly do think Jen knows what she's talking about and boy does she ever! Zappos will be delivering a pair for PB very shortly! If you want to buy some check them out HERE.

Yep! Another pair of shoes! I'm a bit of a shoe fiend and am on the look out for Disney shoes! photo blog13_zps04762d2e.jpg Sanuk yoga slings! Not exactly pretty but oh so comfy! Like stepping on little clouds comfy! Every time that I recommend these to someone they say "Oh I can do thong type shoes. I don't like anything between my toes." Guess what? Me neither but these get away with it. The material is jersey so its very soft and the soles are uber cushy and these are marvelous! You can find them HERE.

Next up: Urban Decay Perversion Mascara and Subversion Primer

I am one of those people that is blessed with very long eyelashes. There is a story floating around that after my mom had me my uncle ran down the hall to tell the rest of the family "It's a girl and Oh My G-d does she have eyelashes!". OK rocking this stuff I look like I'm sporting some fantastic falsies! Awesome stuff I tell you! Also it doesn't irritate my eyes! Bonus! It also doesn't have too much, as in very little if any, raccoon eye after all day wear. You can find it HERE.

Pacifica Natural Skincare Sea Foam Complete Face Wash is so amazing! photo blog11_zps833482b0.jpg
It completely dissolves makeup, smells great while doing it and doesn't dry out your skin even a little bit. This is go to stuff for myself and PB. We both have pretty sensitive skin and never have had any problems with this. You can find it HERE.

Sibu Beauty Sea buckthorn Hydrating Serum. photo blog14_zpsbd7f3686.jpg

I get that after you wash your face you should put on some kind of product to help your skin rejuvenate. Get rid of all those free radical nasties and keep your skin smooth and lovely. I just HATE the feel that most serums leave. Always kinda sticky, know what I mean? Not so with this stuff! Actually, everything I've tried from Sibu Beauty I can pretty much give a thumbs up too. Want your nails to grow like weeds? Try Sibu Beauty cellular support. Find Sibu products HERE.

King Baby

I usually like having two sources before sharing but it doesn't seem like that's going to happen.  There has been a baby girl King born this week!  Most likely Tim and Maggie's baby although a slight chance that Joe's wife Heather had their little bundle of joy.   Regardless, let's congratulate the King clan on their new little princess!

Really Obumer?

First let me say that I understand that life as we know it is much more a world community than ever before with air travel being such common place.  I get that.  I also get that the recent Ebola virus scare is just that.  Scary as all hell.  In past ebola outbreaks the mortality rate has been up to 90%.  That is HUGE folks!  Think about a typical classroom of 30 kids.  Ebola hits and only 3 of them are walking out alive.  Now please understand that I'm in no way suggesting that entire classrooms full of children are going to be stricken with ebola.  I'm just using it as a numerical example of the gravity of this situation.  Ebola is some very nasty stuff that is beyond highly contagious.  There is no cure for it and as I mentioned the mortality rate is HIGH!  You can find some basic information about ebola HERE

So why mention the great Obumer in this context?  Well, you see he signed an executive order the other day.  You can read the White House press release HERE.  This makes it so that people who are most likely suffering from ebola can be transported into the U.S.  Yes I understand that there are other ways ebola is entering the U.S.  That whole world community thing has some downsides.  The fact that we as a country are WILLINGLY bringing people with this virus here is possibly the dumbest thing that this country has done EVER.  Hell it even beats reelecting Obama.  That really tops the cake of stupid.  If you like to read a bit about the 2 ebola patients that are now here (or almost here) in the US you can read it HERE.  My question is what exactly can they receive as far as care to help them fight this virus that they could not receive while still in Africa?  Why in the world would you want to bring something that is this virulent into the country knowinglyAll it takes is one cough, one drop of saliva, one sneeze, and the virus will spread.  I'm sure some people will read this blog and think that I'm off my rocker overreacting.  Especially when you consider that I'm on the somewhat conservative side of vaccinations.  I do have to say that when it comes to something that can be this deadly can you really be too cautious?

Do you ever look at your family and just SMH?

I know at this point in my life that I should fully acknowledge the fact that there are times my family will still be able to amaze me, usually in their stupidity or unfeeling nature, and leave me to ponder whether I am indeed related to them.  Kind of like the other day when my liberal yet Jewish Uncle was trying to make Obamas stance on the Israeli Hamas conflict have a positive spin.  I am surprised that another family member has managed to land such a lob so quickly.  Man, we're talking twice in one week here folks!  Damn- I got off my antidepressants and anxiety meds why?  When I have to deal with this people on a regular basis.  WTF was I thinking?  OK, maybe someone should pass a bottle of wine.

So what exactly is triggering this response?  My mom came home from my sisters tonight and let me know that Bailey, my sisters puppy, is now wearing a shock collar.  Now the back story on this one if you really need to have back story at all other than its freaking inhumane is that many moons ago when my parents adopted Spot, our Dalmatian, (ok not an original name but she was deaf so the name wasn't used often anyway) she had a band around her neck that was open red raw oozing sores from where she'd been shocked repeated with a shock collar.  Oh yeah, its just a little buzz and won't hurt them.  BULLSHIT!  Now I'll be the first to say that Spot was a very stubborn and not well socialized dog when we got her.  Her bark was also piercing.  I admit all those things were problematic.  Don't you think that her previous owners could have clued into the collar not working before the dogs neck was a mess of sores?  So even if I'd been remotely on the fence about shock collars up until that point in time I was dead set against them after that.

Now my sister and her family adopted a pure bred yellow Lab that was born the day before Valentine's Day.  So for all intents and purposes this dog is still a baby.  My parents and I have been pretty against the way that my sister and brother in law have been handling the whole new puppy in the house routine.  They hired a "dog whisperer" who came in and helped with training.  Then about a month ago Bailey was dispatched to live at the dog whisperers house for a month of intense training.  Seriously??!!!??  Who in the bloody fu$% sends off a 5 month old puppy for intense training?  Yes my sister.  Whatever happened to schlepping your dog to obedience 101 and 201 and have a pretty well behaved dog?  Anyhoo- back to Bailey's story.  Bailey returned from the dog whisperer on Sunday.  Guess what?  Bailey is still a very hyper, active and extremely athletic puppy and my sister and brother in law are about to lose it.  HELLO!!!!  You picked a pure bred lab.  They stay puppies for a damn long time.  Certainly at 5 months old you can't expect otherwise.  Except that my sister does.  The first few days Bailey was back were a clusterfu$% in my sisters mind.  The dog whisperer was scheduled for training yesterday.  He spent some time there.  He was there again today.  Bailey is now wearing a shock collar.

Um, I'm pretty sure this puppy whisperer sucks at his job.  I'm very sure that once again my sister had her expectations way too high and completely unrealistic.  I'm also very sure if my sister thinks that I'm going to use the shock collar while I'm baby and dog sitting she has another thing coming.  I'm also beginning to think that Bailey might be coming to live with us since she is obviously too much for my sister to deal with.  I'm very sure it pisses me off that my sister picked a certain kind of dog and can't deal with it.

So here we are and I'm shaking my damn head wondering how in the heck I'm related to these people.

Technology tether

I will admit that a big majority of the time I am a technology junkie.  I love my smart phone and use it often.  I'll even admit if it was broken, lost or otherwise not accessible I would be a seriously unhappy camper.  All of that said I will also admit that it is still a convenience and there are times I willingly cut the cord so to speak.  Yesterday was one of those days that I decided to do a voluntary cord cut if you will.  You would not believe the reactions that happen when people can't get hold of you instantly.  My sister called to ask me something.  First words out of her mouth were "Do you know that your phone is rolling right to voicemail?"  Now I'm sure that she was trying to be helpful in case I didn't know that it was happening and perhaps my voicemail box was full.  Its just the fact that there was no "Hi.  How are you".  The next instance was from Princess Bears (PB) best friend.  Now I've mentioned before that more times than not this little girl rubs me the wrong way.  Perhaps this will give a bit of a glimpse into why.  I answered the house phone and this little girl is on the other end.  Here is how the conversation went.

Sarah "Hello?"
Little Girl (LG) "My mom text you and you haven't text back!" said in a very accusing manner.
Sarah "My phone is off.  I haven't gotten the text yet. Sorry"
LG "What are we doing today?"
Sarah "I don't think it can work today.  I have OT, we have to pick up PB's grandmother from work and PB has her school and horseback riding therapy today"
LG "So PB can't do anything today?"
Sarah "No LG I don't think it will work today"
Little girl then hangs up.

OK let's take this from the top.
- Little girl probably should have left this phone call to her mother that said she didn't.
-Little girl should have said "Hello Sarah.  How are you today?  Did you get my mom's text?"  That would have probably helped the way I perceived the entire phone call in a much better way.
-One should always say goodbye.

Am I not being fair in my assessment of this phone call?  As I said this little girl drives me up the wall and her parents tend to try to use her special needs as a way of explaining her behavior.  I don't quite by in on that one.  I think she's a little girl who says whatever comes to her mind without filter.  A few times I've even asked her why she says things and she gets upset with me but won't answer.  That isn't a case of special needs then.

I was discussing this phone call with my friend Renee and saying how much I like this girls mom but the kid just makes me crazy.  She reminded me that I have to take the good with the bad.  True enough.  I will also try to make it a learning experience for my child.  If I ever hear her being rude on the phone like that it will be a long time before she is allowed to use the phone again.

It also taught me that perhaps I need to have even more voluntary cut the cord times from my cell.  I do it at home under the guise of whoever can leave a message and I'll get back to them.  I think it's time to start looking at my cell in the same light.  There is no rule that I have to be accessible 24 hours a day.  What to you think?
